DALLY M AWARDS
The Dally M
Medal is awarded each year to the player voted for as the 'Player of
the year' over the regular season, as well as other individual
awards. It was named in honour of former rugby league player Herbert
Henry "Dally" Messenger. The award was first awarded in 1979 as the
unofficial player of the year through the Daily Mirror newspaper
(the Rothmans Medal was the official award). In 1998 it was adopted
by the National Rugby League as the official award for the Player of
the Year. |
DALLY
M MEDAL
It has been contended that
Craig Gower would have won the Dally M award in 2003, however the
ceremony did not proceed due to industrial action from the Rugby League
Players Association (RLPA). In 2021, the NRL stated that there was
"insufficient evidence" that Craig Gower would have won the award, and
hence will never be awarded |
